1/3_ SALVATORI OFFICIAL OPENING IN N.Y _ CONCEPT AND FIRST DOODLES

Salvatori has commissioned me the visual communication for the launch of their first Showroom in New York, scheduled to openin February 2023 in the heart of Soho.

 

Approach:

The key visual of my graphic project is Gabriele Salvatori himself, CEO, heart and mind of the company. Opening the showroom in NY celebrates his dream and his incredible ability, energy, and lightness of movement in the world of design and in surrounding himself with talented collaborators. I wanted him at the centre of everything by creating his character that allowed me to communicate and play with joy, verve and irony without falling into self-celebration. It was a risky proposal and off the track, but I was certain that the poetics and irony of a simple gesture could strike at the heart. Good thing because I had no plan b, as always when an idea sticks with you. 

 

Once the charachter and the illustrations were made I could finally "start to play" with it.

FOLDING BOOK designed for "CERVELLI RIBELLI" - "Fondazione Cervelli Ribelli" Onlus

CONCEPT E DISEGNO DEL PROGETTO.

Ho proposto di creare un libretto che accompagnasse il gioco da tavolo "La tavolata dei cervelli ribelli". Ero certa valesse la pena di spiegare ed informare il cliente cosa avesse per le mani. Non solo un gioco da tavolo (tavola:) ma una "visione" per cambiare la propria prospettiva nei riguardi del mondo dell'autismo, verso quei cervelli ribelli: una risorsa, non un limite.
Ho affrontato il progetto nel modo che preferisco: attraverso l'ARTE DEL FUMETTO".

La mia intenzione è stata quella di trasformare un messaggio delicato e complesso con semplicità, leggerezza ed immediatezza.
Ho cominciato dal protagonista del libretto: Tommy.

Tommy è il figlio del giornalista e scrittore Gianluca Nicoletti e fondatore di "Cervelli Ribelli" .

Tommy è un ragazzo autistico ma soprattutto un artista che con passione e senza sosta dipinge "strane creature" che prendono forma su tele, salterellano in esposizioni ed in questo caso sono arrivate ad animare un gioco da tavola, GENIALE.

Pieghevole, Manifesto ed istruzioni del gioco "La tavolata dei cervelli ribelli".

 

Kit gioco “La tavolata degli animali ribelli”

Un pretesto divertente per scompigliare la tradizionale gerarchia che ha sempre dettato legge nell’attribuzione dei posti a tavola. Un sistema arcaico che viene in messo in discussione grazie a questo gioco, affidando alla sorte il compito di assegnare, di volta in volta, un ruolo a ogni singolo commensale.

Kit composto da: 6 tovagliette, un centrotavola con il regolamento del gioco e un dado in legno.

La collezione prende il nome dall’autore di questi disegni, Tommy, ragazzo autistico e figlio del noto giornalista e scrittore Gianluca Nicoletti.
Il progetto nasce dalla collaborazione con Fondazione Cervelli Ribelli Onlus, fondazione onlus il cui scopo è sperimentare concrete azioni che favoriscano l’inclusione sociale e lavorativa di persone con neurodiversità, oltre che diffondere cultura e informazione sul valore della diversità in senso più ampio.

 - L'autismo è una malattia per alcuni versi ancora 'misteriosa' e per la quale non esiste al momento una cura: l'autismo colpisce, solo in Italia, tra le 300 e le 500mila persone e le loro famiglie.

 CONCEPT AND GRAPHIC DESIGN PROJECT 

I proposed to create a booklet to accompany the board game 'The Table of Rebellious Brains'. I was sure it was worth explaining and informing the customer what they had on their hands. Not just a board game but a "vision" to change one's perspective towards the world of autism, towards those rebellious brains that should be a resource and not a limitation.
I approached the project in the way I prefer: through the ART OF THE CARTOON.

My intention was to transform a delicate and complicated message with simplicity, lightness and immediacy.
I started with the protagonist of the booklet: Tommy. He is the son of journalist and writer Gianluca Nicoletti and founder of "Cervelli Ribelli" . Tommy is an autistic boy but above all an artist who passionately and relentlessly paints 'strange creatures' that take shape on canvases, jump around in exhibitions and in this case have come to animate a GENIAL board game.

Kit game "The Table of Rebellious Animals" 

An amusing pretext to disrupt the traditional hierarchy that has always dictated the allocation of places at the table. An archaic system that is called into question thanks to this game, entrusting fate with the task of assigning a role to each individual diner.

Kit consists of: 6 placemats, a centrepiece with the rules of the game and a wooden dice.

The collection is named after the author of these drawings, Tommy, an autistic boy and son of the well-known journalist and writer Gianluca Nicoletti.
The project was born from the collaboration with Fondazione Cervelli Ribelli Onlus, a non-profit foundation whose aim is to experiment concrete actions that favour the social and work inclusion of people with neurodiversity, as well as to spread culture and information on the value of diversity in a broader sense.

- Autism is a disease that is in some ways still 'mysterious' and for which there is currently no cure: in Italy autism affects between 300 and 500,000 people - and their families.

Cut out mask illustrated by flowers then applied with a lace to a screenprinted cardboard.

The mask has been worn by the journalists, buyers, fashion bloggers attending the cat walk fashion show :)

SELF COMMISSIONED ANIMATION inspired by "HOW TO WORK BETTER" by PETER FISCHLI & DAVID WEISS

 

A bunch of years ago when I first read this manifesto my heart - and brain -  had a gasp. 10 statements each one so true and functional... and at the same time difficult to follow. If only you could make yours at least 6 out of 10 you are on the right truck..

I've made this animation truly inspired by the evergreen content of them, this showld be the modus operandi for each one of us: designers, artists, housewives, mechanics, managers, schoolchildren...

Unlike the fontype used by the 2 artists on the mural installed on a building -  I've preferred to use a naive one as the content is so deep and engaging.

..and now which is the most difficult point to follow? N..1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6........ ?

"How to Work Better’s ten-point list of simple statements suggests that “working better” is as much about an approach to everyday life as it is about productivity. The artists originally appropriated the text from a sign found on a bulletin board in a ceramic factory in Thailand nearly three decades ago. Since then, the piece has taken different forms, from postcard to screen print to book cover. Most famously, the artists’ first installed it as a mural on an office building in Zurich in 1991."

 

 

 

 About the Exhibition

How to Work Better is a readymade artwork by Peter Fischli (b. 1952) and David Weiss (1946-2012) that has been hand-painted on a building on Houston Street at the corner of Mott Street in Lower Manhattan. It is also the title of the artist’s concurrent retrospective at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.

Since 1979, the Swiss artist duo have created an extraordinary breadth of work, often ignoring the traditional distinctions between high and low art. With a sincere curiosity about human nature and wonder in the everyday, they have embraced new possibilities for encounters with art, both inside and outside the gallery.

 

 

 25 years later, the simple yet clichéd statements used to motivate workers in a faraway factory have become a widely circulated ethos with copies found taped to the walls and desks of many artists and curators who have adopted the rules as a guide for how to work in the studio, the institution, and as collaborators. On Houston and Mott, at the center of the city that never sleeps, How to Work Better resonates in new ways. In our digital era, where the commercial landscape is ever present and the very nature of work is being redefined, the ten pithy statements are almost humorously direct. Are these merely platitudes or enduring rules to live by? How might this workplace manifesto apply to our daily lives? How to Work Better invites us to stop and think again about just how and why it is that we do what we do.

This exhibition is curated by Public Art Fund Curator Andria Hickey.

PAPER ENGINEERING | KENZO INVITATION SS 2009 | "In memory of a summer day"

 

 

It's summer again, and my mind flows to one of the most beautiful invitation I've ever made. It was about Kenzo fashion show which took place in Paris in 2009.

The paper engineering in this project is a mix of awesome creativity, technical skills and precious printing and paper companies. The flower images of the internal pages were scanned by a very old book of my English grandmother and the central pop-up butterfly blooming has been such a complicated and articulated matter of precision and inspiration... It took about 2 months to develop this little lovely book..so that the set up of the fashion show was made of giant pop-up books. Kind of beautiful.

 I've developed the invitation under the precious direction of Paolo Bazzani. The collection created by Antonio Marras - which at the time was Kenzo's art director - was ispired by the magical of flowers and  Alice in Wonderland.

This represent for me a milestone in my graphic design career. I'm very proud of it expecially in this era in which everything is digital oriented. W paper!

The Professor Behind The First Printed Use of ‘Shit Happens’

Connie Eble’s annual list of catchphrases that she compiles from her students at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill included a new entry in 1983: “Shit happens.”

An unnamed female student wrote the phrase on an index card in Eble’s English class, apparently inspired by a someone who had flunked a test. “That shit happens,” he said.

That index card would become the first published use of the phrase, according to 2006’s Yale Book of Quotations.

The phrase has become ingrained in American culture, helped along by music, movies (Forrest Gump, among others), and books.

Eble, though, seems bemused to be forever tied to it.

“Will this never die? I didn’t come up with it—it just so happened that my list was the earliest citation. And now it’s become sort of an urban myth.”

Ho lavorato su una sua foto iconica e via, sono partita a giocare con lui.

Sì Mari è il gorilla dell'arte, degli oggetti per tutti, il più grande di tutti, il più grande della giungla.

     

Ho creato questo minuscolabrevissimo pensierino perchè io vedo Enzo così. Serio e rigoroso fumatore di toscani, sguardo fiero - a tratti malinconico - e un po folle..ma di chi la sa lunga, di chi l'ha fatta grossa.

I testi dell'animazione sono estrapolati da l'intervista fatta da Egle Santolini nel 2013 per "La Stampa" che trovate qui. 

Il collage è l'unione di un ritratto fotografico e il suo gorilla. ( ci tengo a precisare che gli occhi del gorilla sono gli occhi di Enzo..per chi non avesse notato:)

 

    Era il 2010. Quanto Mari è entrato nella stanza la stanza è diventata minuscola. C'era solo lui nel suo loden e le sue imprecazioni...poco velate. 

L'ho visto ed ascoltato dal visto un unica volta ad una lezione di design presso, non ricordo l'associazione, era tipo in P.ta Genova.

Ora non c'è più e avidamente cerco di ricordare quell'oretta passata con il gigante tra il saggio e l'iracondo.

Proprio questa visione impressa nella memoria mi fatto fare 1+1= il Gorilla della "Serie della Natura” è decisamente il suo autoritratto.

Nel corso del tempo ha realizzato una varietà di opere straordinarie – in carta, legno, vetro, ceramica, ferro, acciaio – che, muovendosi senza obblighi tra arte, design, architettura e grafica, oggi abitano collezioni, musei, spazi domestici diffusi in tutto il pianeta.

La profondità del suo lavoro, il suo scavo nella so- stanza del mondo, sono un contrappunto all’ironia e allo sdegno verso quella superficiale mediocrità che Mari ha letto – con qualche rarissima eccezione, tra cui quella di Ettore Sottsass, così lontano eppure così vicino nell’etica del lavoro – nelle sfere della progettazione e della critica.

Non stupisce dunque che in una sua recente intervi- sta (Enzo Mari: i miei archivi per Milano, riportata a pp. 68-69) Mari abbia dichiarato la ferma volontà di donare l’intera collezione delle sue opere alla città di Milano, a condizione che per quarant’anni nessuno possa avere accesso al suo Archivio. Questo perché, secondo le sue più ottimistiche ipotesi, solo tra qua- rant’anni una nuova generazione, “non degradata come quella odierna”, potrà farne un uso consapevole e riprendere così in mano il significato profondo delle cose."
